MOUNT MORRIS – Gerald G. Slater, 68, formerly of Sterling-Rock Falls, died Saturday Nov. 24, 2012, at his home.

Gerald was a truck driver for many years before retiring.

He was born March 4, 1944, in Princeton, the son of Charles and Marie (Brummer) Slater. He married Wilma Thone on Sept. 29, 1962, in Spring Valley. She died on Jan. 27, 2003.

Surviving are his four sons, Ken (Tom Jennings) Slater of Avon, Jeff (Jake) Slater of Rock Falls, Jason (Leanna) Slater of Cordova, and Jeremy (Kristy) Slater of Oakland, Tenn.; one daughter, Kelli (Joe) Larkin of Rock Falls; his fiancé, Rachel Pieper of Mount Morris; his sister-in-law, Josephine Slater of Sterling; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Robert Slater; and one sister, Dorothy Balma.

A gathering of friends and family will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1002 12th Ave. in Rock Falls. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Louis Tosto, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church of Polo, officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
