Comets claim Shootout victory
The Newman Comets roared out to a big lead, then recovered from a rough second quarter to beat Princeton 54-46 in a Sauk Valley Shootout game Friday evening at Musgrove Fieldhouse.
The Comets (3-1) led 21-8 after the opening 8 minutes, then were outscored 11-4 in the second period. But they built on their 25-19 halftime lead and hung on for the victory.
A.J. Sharp scored 14 points for Newman, and Kyle Moore added 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks. John Payan scored eight and Micah Trancoso nabbed four steals.
Oregon tournament
Oregon 62, Christian Life 46: The Hawks advanced to the title game of their own tournament with a come-from-behind win.
Trailing by three points going into the fourth quarter, Oregon (3-0) outscored the Eagles 27-8 over the final 8 minutes. Caleb Mowry scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, and Alec Ketter had 15 of his 17 after the break.
The Hawks will face Mendota for the tourney championship Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Genoa-Kingston 64, West Carroll 46: The Thunder were outscored 37-20 after halftime in a loss in Oregon.
Tommy Losch led West Carroll (0-3) with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. Nick Hughes added 10 points and five assists for the Thunder, who will play the Hampshire JV for seventh place Saturday.
AFC tournament
Amboy 71, Hiawatha 33: Tyson Powers hit six 3-pointers and poured in 28 points as the Clippers rolled in Ashton.
Damon Quest added 17 points, including three 3s, for Amboy (2-1), which hit 10 3s as a team and outscored Hiawatha 60-23 through the first three quarters.
AFC 71, LaMoille-Ohio 51: The Raiders used a 39-20 scoring edge in the second and third quarters to improve to 2-1 at their own season-opening tourney.
Nick McClanahan led AFC with 16 points, while Troy Mairs scored 15 and Ermir Ramadani added 12.
Orion tournament
Orion 55, Erie 44: Jacob Johnston’s 25 points – 15 of them on 3s – wasn’t enough for the Cardinals to knock off their hosts.
Dylan Schultz scored a team-high 15 points for the Chargers, who led just 24-21 at the half. Rhett Stover pitched in 10 points and a pair of 3s for Erie (1-2).
Sherrard 60, Fulton 53: John Widener scored 22 points, but the Steamers were outscored 42-30 in the first three quarters in Orion.
Nick Fish added 13 points for Fulton (0-3), while Matt Dail had eight and Jake Willging chipped in seven.
Ridgewood

Prophetstown 69, Ridgewood 52: The Prophets held Ridgewood scoreless for the first 6:20 of the second half in a tourney victory.
Devin Johnson scored 17 points and Josh Green had 10 for Prophetstown (2-1), which had 10 different players score – and six of them had at least seven points.

Elmwood 77, Bureau Valley 63: Nick Jehle steadily filled the bucket to the tune of 32 points for the Trojans.
Parker Neuhalfen led the Bureau Valley (2-2) with 22 points, and Tommy Johnston pitched in 11. Cal Vrchota and Jake Soenn scored 19 and 14 points for
Elmwood, respectively.
