Loos named NIB-12 West MVP

Sterling senior Krista Loos was named the Northern Illinois Big 12 West volleyball MVP, as the league released its all-conference team Tuesday.

Loos is joined on the team by classmates Peyton Cater and Jennifer Rahn, and Warriors junior Kiarra Harris. Dixon junior Kari Wolfe is also on the squad.

Sterling senior McKenna Pearson and Dixon sophomore Amy Rotella were honorable mention selections. A full list of the team can be found on B11.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Eastland alum Heeren on title team

Taylor Heeren, a 2012 graduate of Eastland High School, was a freshman reserve this past season on the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) volleyball squad that won the NCAA Division-III national championship Saturday.

St. Thomas rallied for a 13-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 15-9 victory over Calvin (Mich.) College in the title tilt in Holland, Mich., finishing its 40-1 season with a 35-match winning streak.

Heeren also was part of a back-to-back Class 1A state titles with the Cougars in 2008 and ‘09, her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Dixon’s Lumzy named wrestler of the week

The Northern Sun Conference named Dixon graduate and Upper Iowa University senior Bryce Lumzy its wrestler of the week.

Lumzy won the 157-pound title at a second straight tournament thanks to a 4-0 day Saturday at the Auggie-Brute Open at Augsburg College. He is 11-1 with seven wins by fall and a pair of major decisions.

First-weekend deer harvest up 10 percent

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Naturall Resources reported that hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 72,111 deer during the opening weekend of the firearm deer season Nov. 16-18. The season’s second weekend is Nov. 29-Dec. 2.

Only 66,501 deer were harvested during the first weekend last season.

Cubs designate LaHair, trade for Loux

The Cubs have designated All-Star Bryan LaHair for assignment, a precursor to sending him to Japan, and have traded with the Rangers for Double-A Texas League pitcher of the year Barret Loux.

Loux, 23, and a player to be named were acquired from the Rangers for pitcher Jake Brigham. Loux is a compensation replacement for Brigham, who was acquired from the Rangers during the season for catcher Geovany Soto but came to the Cubs with an injured elbow.
