STERLING – Police are looking for a Sterling man in connection with Saturday’s shooting of another man near Sixth Avenue and East Fifth Street.

Octavius L. Zackery, 35, formerly of Chicago, is wanted on a warrant for aggravated battery with a firearm, police said in a news release. Zackery, also known as Lamar, T, Ta, Ock or Ocky, is black, 5 feet 4 inches tall and about 124 pounds.

A 29-year-old Sterling man was shot in the pelvis around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The man apparently was intoxicated, and was taken to CGH Medical Center, where he was treated then checked himself out.

At the time, the victim, whose name has not been released, was refusing to cooperate with the investigation, Detective Sgt. Steve Hubbard said.

It was not known today if that had changed, or how police were directed to Zackery.

Witnesses said they saw or heard two people arguing in the street before a shot rang out. A bullet casing found at the scene was sent to the state police crime lab in Rockford, Hubbard said.

At the time, the shooting didn’t appear to be gang-related, he added. No one was available today to say if that information had changed.

Anyone with information on Zackery’s whereabouts is asked to call police at 815-632-6640 or the anonymous reward hotline, Whiteside County Crime Stoppers, at 877-625-7867.

Good or bad? Depends on who you ask

Sometimes readers ask for more good news in the paper. They say we in the media only cover the bad. But one person's positive is another's negative.
