Benefit for burned firefighter Saturday

OREGON – A benefit for Oregon firefighter Thomas Jones, 25, burned Aug. 20 in an explosion and fire, will be held from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at the Oregon VFW, 1310 W. Washington St./state Route 64.

Pulled pork sandwiches and chips will be served, and there will be a deejay and dancing, a silent auction, a gun raffle and a 50/50 raffle. One of the prizes is a John Deere snowblower.

Admission is $5.

Jones was working on a demolition derby car in the garage behind his house when the explosion and fire occurred. He was burned over 85 percent of his body, and has remained hospitalized and undergone several skin grafts.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
