Restaurant, ice cream parlor and bakery

Niccoli's aims to please all of Prophetstown – and beyond

PROPHETSTOWN – Prophetstown residents no longer have to leave town for two things: a Mexican restaurant or a bakery.

That's because Larry and Andrea Niccoli have opened both – along with an ice cream parlor – in one business: Niccoli's.

The couple, who often went to the Quad Cities to eat, wanted to open a local business to keep people eating enchiladas and hard-serve ice cream in P-town, Andrea said.

Niccoli's opened Oct. 25 at 44 Grove St. Larry and Andrea, 55 and 53, have lived in Prophetstown for 30 years, and Andrea owned The Coffee Shop from 1978 to 1981.

Their new venture is intended to appeal to Prophetstown residents who crave a sweet treat or a Mexican dish.

"We're trying to reach a wide audience in a small town," Andrea said.

Residents "seem to be very happy about it," Larry Niccoli said. The ice cream has continued to be popular even in the colder weather, he added.

Richard Maronde, 53, of Prophetstown, said he was "tickled to death" with the restaurant as he enjoyed a Mexican lunch recently.

"It's awesome," he said.

The bakery serves cinnamon rolls and pies made from scratch, and the barbacoa-seasoned meats have become a popular ingredient in the Mexican dishes, Andrea said.

The restaurant is collaborating with other businesses. It will deliver during its hours of operation to Cragel's, a bar that opened Nov. 17 downtown, Larry said. Poppasneb's gourmet popcorn, owned by Prophetstown couple Ron and Diane Schnoebelen, also can be bought at the restaurant.

The Niccolis also plan to host acoustic musicians and to hang artwork by students from Prophetstown High School.

The restaurant is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
