James ‘Jack’ Chapman

VERNON HILLS – James “Jack” Chapman, 88, formerly of Sterling, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was the owner of Chapman Brothers.

James was born March 13, 1924, in Sterling, the son of Simon and Alice (Idelson) Chapman. He served as a medic in the Army. He married Ruth French on July 26, 1945, in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, England. James was a member of Temple Sholom in Sterling.  

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; one daughter, Susan (Howard) Wolff of Deerfield; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece.

There will be no visitation. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling handled arrangements.

Donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
