Investors sought to back inventive educational class

Published: Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 1:15 a.m. CDT

Our community has a terrific opportunity to open more doors to our future and create unique learning opportunities for our area students because of the efforts of the Whiteside Area Career Center and Blackhawk Hills Regional Council.

Through those efforts, the Sterling-Rock Falls area is fortunate to be a finalist for bringing the Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) program to our area high school students.

The program offers students real-life lessons in entrepreneurship, encourages creativity, and matches students with local business leaders.

However, we now need the community’s support to make the program a reality. As one of three finalists for the CEO program, our final requirement is to demonstrate investor/community buy-in to the program.

Our area has a long history of entrepreneurism. It is that same spirit that will lead us through the 21st century, and we need to encourage that environment ourselves.

We are asking every facet of the business community to please step forward to sponsor and be a part of the local CEO program to give our students this unique chance.

We need at least 25 people or businesses to sponsor a $3,000 tax-deductible contribution, payable over 3 years, to make this a reality.

Let’s help our local students realize there are opportunities here and teach them that they can succeed through education, creativity, hard work and boldness.

Let them see that Sterling-Rock Falls is a good place to come home to and create new business opportunities.

Please contact Kim Purvis at the Whiteside Area Career Center at 815-626-5810 or email Kim at kpurvis@wacc.cc to help.

Note to readers – Charles “Skip” Lee is the mayor of Sterling, and Scott Shumard is the city manager.
