Comets best Stillman at shootout

Erie wins Princeton tournament; Sauk squads sweep

The Newman Comets finished with a 3-2 record at the Sauk Valley Shootout by beating Stillman Valley 51-43 Saturday at Tabor Gym in Rock Falls. 

Mary Alice Oswalt led the way with 14 points, followed by Rachel Hageman with 13 points. 

Jessica Hellyer had 13 points for Stillman Valley (0-5).

Sherrard 51, Dixon 40: The Duchesses dropped the final game of the Sauk Valley Shootout to the Tigers at Tabor Gym. 

Sherrard claimed the tournament title with a perfect 5-0 record. Dixon dropped to 1-4. 

Princeton tournament

Erie 42, Stark County 29: Courtney Cobert and Des Lawson scored 11 points each to lead the Cardinals to the Princeton tournament championship game. 

Laykin Miner added six points for Erie.  

Forreston tournament

Eastland 1-1 in Forreston: The Cougars split a pair of games at the Forreston tournament. They lost to Rochelle 43-22 then beat Winnebago 51-33. 

Ashely Nepean led the Cougars (3-1) against the Hubs with nine points. 

Lexis Macomber paced Eastland against Winnebago with 16 points. 

AFC tournament

AFC 58, Earlville 54: The Raiders were led by Sarah Matson, who scored 28 points to improve to 3-1 on the season. 

Alisyn Essex added 14 points for the Raiders. 

Zetterberg Tournament

Behind Sarah Smith's 33 total points, Faith Christian earned two victories and third place at their own tournament in Grand Detour.

Smith scored 16 in the Falcons' 42-30 victory over Quad Cities Christian, then poured in 17 more in a 36-17 victory over East Moline Christian in the third-place game.

Men's basketball

Sauk Valley 77, Malcolm X 62: Daven Ottley scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Skyhawks won at home.

Also for Sauk Valley (3-1), Jalen Riley had 15 points, and Magd Owayed added 12 rebounds, 11 points and two blocks.

Women's basketball

Sauk Valley 95, Malcolm X 88 OT: Lydia Box poured in 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Skyhawks gained an overtime win over visiting Malcolm X.

Also for Sauk Valley (3-2), Kayla Barlow had 23 points, six assists and six rebounds, Holly Nicklaus had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Arlecia Turner added 17 boards and eight points.
