Sterling swimmers end season at state

Oregon, Erie, Eastland, AFC hoops win

Sterling’s Charli Wike and Shannon Long each had one-day stays as competitors at the IHSA’s Swimming and Diving state finals on Friday in Evanston.

Wike competed in a pair of swimming events. Her time of 1 minute, 6.8 seconds earned her 21st place among 52 swimmers in the 100 breaststroke. She also competed in the 200 IM and posted a time of 2:14.83, 34th among 35 swimmers.

Long accumulated 105.95 points in the diving competition, 47th among 48 competitors.

In swimming events, the top six finishers in the preliminary round advance to the championship finals, while the next six advance to the consolation finals. The top 12 divers move on to the championship finals.

Girls basketball

Oregon tournament

Oregon 45, Amboy 39, OT: The Hawks outscored the Clippers 6-0 in the extra period to pull out a win at home.

McKaylee Beeter led Oregon (2-0) with 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and Emylyn Wright scored 12.

Brooke Lovgren nailed five 3s for Amboy and finished with 15 points, while Kaitlyn Liebing had in 10.

Pecatonica 46, Milledgeville 35: The Missiles were outscored 16-8 in the fourth quarter of a pool-play loss in Oregon.

Courtney Swalve scored a game-high 16 points for Milledgeville (0-2), shooting 8-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Princeton tournament

Erie 65, LaMoille 33: Ten different Cardinals scored as Erie stayed unbeaten with a lopsided win in Princeton.

Kayla Waggoner scored 12 points and Rachel Cobert added 10 for the Cards (3-0). Paige and Payton Rus each had eight points, and Paige dished four assists; Laykin Miner matched those four assists and chipped in six points.

Erie had 18 assists on 27 field goals.

Midland 51, Bureau Valley 23: The Storm fell behind 23-5 after one quarter and couldn’t catch up at Princeton.

Nicole Bornsheuer scored 15 for BV (0-3).

Forreston tournament

Eastland 52, Rockford Christian Life 39: Miranda Grisham and Lexis Macomber scored 10 points apiece to lead the Cougars in their opener at Forreston.

Courtney Walker and Hannah Hake added nine points each for Eastland (2-0), which led 27-19 at halftime and put the game away with a 14-9 edge in the fourth quarter.

AFC tournament

AFC 47, Paw Paw 40: The Raiders rolled up a 42-24 lead through three quarters, then hung on at their own tournament.

Sarah Matson and Alisyn Essex each had 14 points for AFC (2-1).

Zetterburg tourney

Washington Co. 54, Faith Christian 34: Amanda Smith and Tressa Schuler each had 10 points for the Falcons in a loss to a team from the Milwaukee area in the first round of the Zetterburg Tourney in Grand Detour.

Washington County’s Sarah Schneider scored 23 points and Jesse Dauster added 16.
