Obituaries

John L. Leary

OREGON – John L. Leary, 89, a lifelong Oregon resident, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at home.

John was born April 14, 1923, in Jesup, Iowa, to George and Rose (Schmidt) Leary. John was a 1941 Oregon High School graduate and a World War II Marine Corps veteran.

He married Mary Sauer on Feb. 28, 1946; she died Sept. 19, 1949. He married Mary Shaffner on May 19, 1950.

He was a dairy farmer in rural Oregon from 1948 to 1998 and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon and Rochelle VFW Post 3878. He was Illinois VFW District 6 commander from 1987 to 1988.

He served on the Oregon School Board for 17 years and the Ogle County Board for 20 years and was known to his wife as John “Meetings” Leary.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Susan (Rob) Osborne of Oregon; sons, Tim (Kathy) Leary of Oregon, Mike Leary of Daly City, Calif., and Steve (Zina) Leary of Oregon; son-in-law, Butch (Bonnie) Blumeyer of Oregon; grandchildren, Celeste Lyles, Vanessa Ankey, T.J. Leary, Mark Leary, Stacey Glendenning and Cassidy Speaker; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Angela) Leary of Oregon; and brother-in-law, Charles Shaffner of Oregon.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Nancy Ann; daughter, Kathleen Blumeyer; grandson, Joshua Blumeyer; and sisters, Evelyn Fruin and Vera Mattison. 

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home in Oregon, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon, with the Rev. Joseph Naill, pastor, as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Serenity Hospice and Home of Oregon, St. Mary Catholic Church or Rochelle VFW.
