Comets edged by Tigers in Shootout

The Newman Comets suffered their first loss of the season Thursday, falling to Sherrard 49-42 in a Sauk Valley Shootout game on the road.

Kayci Howell scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Mary Alice Oswalt added 11 points and four boards for the Comets (2-1), who trailed 26-20 at halftime and couldn’t make up the difference. Rachel Hageman chipped in nine points and Aubree Schmitt dished six assists.

Anne Winston led the Tigers (3-0) with 15 points, and Erin Barten added 14, including three 3-pointers.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
