Local roundup: Steamers, Missiles fall; Sauk sweeps MATC
Prophets pick up first win of year
The Prophetstown Prophets picked up their first win of the season Wednesday, opening the Oregon Tournament with a 46-33 victory over Marquette.
Corrie Reiley went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line and led the Prophets (1-0) with 12 points. Older sister Cassie Reiley hit three 3-pointers and added 11 points, and Riley Walters chipped in 10 for Prophetstown, which led 30-17 at halftime.
Mendota 51, Fulton 21: The Steamers netted just four points in each of the first three quarters in an Oregon Tournament loss.
Morgan Wierema scored 10 points for Fulton (0-1). Ally Bromenschenkel and Amy Devitt each had 13 for the Trojans.
Rockford Lutheran 62, Milledgeville 21: The Missiles trailed 28-8 after one quarter and 42-9 at halftime in an Oregon Tournament loss.
Liz Bryant and Courtney Swalve scored five points apiece to lead Milledgeville (0-1). Sam Rundblade poured in 21 for Lutheran.
Men’s basketball
Sauk Valley 74, MATC 61: The Skyhawks controlled the second half after being tied at halftime with Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wis.
Sauk (2-1), led by sophomore Daven Ottley’s game-high 20 points, quickly broke up the 31-31 tie at the break. Point guard Carlos Hendrix had 12 assists to just two turnovers, and Magd Owayed scored 14 points on 7-for-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Women’s basketball
Sauk Valley 56, MATC 53: Lydia Box scored a team-high 15 points as the Skyhawks earned the road win over Madison Area Technical College.
Holly Nicklaus hit three 3-pointers and added 11 points for Sauk (2-2), with Kayla Barlow and Arlicia Turner tossing in 10 apiece. Sheldeen Joseph contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
