World AIDS Day program at Sauk
DIXON – A World AIDS Day event is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 state Route 2.
The public is welcome to attend.
SVCC clubs will have information tables and activities set up to increase awareness of AIDS while breaking the many myths that surround it. Participants also will be welcome to create support ribbons to wear. The Lee County Health Department employees will be available to provide information as well as free, confidential rapid HIV testing from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This year SVCC also has the privilege of displaying sections of the AIDS memorial quilt in the east mall from Monday through Friday. Guests will be able to view three sections of the 54-ton handmade tapestry. The whole quilt, started in 1987 by a small group in San Francisco, shows more 94,000 names of individuals who lost to AIDS, on more 1.3 million square feet of material. It is the largest community art project in the world.
The program and quilt display are free to the public and are sponsored by SVCC’s student activities and student government.
