MLB

Managers Johnson, Melvin honored

Davey Johnson of the Washington Nationals and Bob Melvin of the Oakland Athletics have been chosen as managers of the year, their second such honor.

Johnson easily won the NL honor after the Nationals had the best record in baseball. Melvin was picked narrowly for the AL award over Baltimore’s Buck Showalter in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Johnson was tabbed as the AL’s top manager in 1997 with Baltimore, with Melvin the NL winner in 2007 with Arizona.

Marlins dump salary, stars on Blue Jays

The Miami Marlins traded starters Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle, shortstop Jose Reyes, outfielder/infielder Emilio Bonifacio and catcher John Buck to the Toronto Blue Jays, a league source confirmed.

What the Marlins are getting back in what amounts to a massive salary dump is unconfirmed. Fox Sports is reporting shortstop Yunel Escobar, right-hander Henderson Alvarez, left-hander Justin Nicolino, and infielder Adeiny Hechavarria are among the players headed to South Florida.

The Marlins, assuming they are not sending any money to the Blue Jays, unloaded $163.75 million in guaranteed contracts to Buck, Buehrle, Johnson and Reyes.
