Hoosiers, Wolverines cruise to wins; ISU rolls

Hawkeyes put away CMU

Mike Gesell scored 15 points and fueled a big second-half run as the Hawkeyes beat Central Michigan 73-61 on Monday night in Iowa City.

Gesell played almost the entire second half — much of it alongside his backup, Anthony Clemmons — as Iowa held off the Chippewas' small but pesky lineup.

Devyn Marble scored 18 points to lead the Hawkeyes, who couldn't pull away against the inexperienced Chippewas until a 13-2 run midway through the second half.

Kyle Randall scored 17 points for Central Michigan (0-1). The Chippewas cut the lead to seven points with 4 ½ minutes left, but got no closer.

Minnesota 82, Toledo 56: Rodney Williams had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals, Austin Hollins scored 10 of his 13 points in the game's first five minutes and Minnesota blew by Toledo in Minneapolis.

No. 1 Indiana 87, N. Dakota St. 61: Cody Zeller scored 22 points and Remy Abell added a career-high 14 to lead No. 1 Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.

No. 5 Michigan 91, IUPUI 54: Trey Burke scored 22 points and Glenn Robinson III added 21 to lead Michigan in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Illinois State 100, UC Santa Barbara 72: Jackie Carmichael had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Illinois State used a 21-0 first-half run to coast to a season-opening victory over UC Santa Barbara in Normal.

Tyler Brown added 22 points for the Redbirds, who shot 62 percent from the field, including 10 of 20 from 3-point range.

S. Illinois 72, New Orleans 55: Jeff Early obliterated his previous career best with 27 points as the Salukis took a victory at New Orleans.

Early, whose previous high was 18 points, made 11 of 16 shots and pulled down 12 rebounds — also a career high.

Desmar Jackson joined Early in double figures with 17 points.

Bradley 78, Texas-Pan American 61: Will Egloff and Walt Lemon Jr. scored 14 points apiece as Bradley defeated Texas-Pan American in Peoria.

Dyricus Simms-Edwards had 11 points and Jake Eastman scored 10 for the Braves (2-0), who never trailed in the contest played at the on-campus Renaissance Coliseum. Most of the Braves' games are at Carver Arena.

Lemon also had a game-high six assists for Bradley.
