ROCK FALLS – With the holidays right around the corner, local businesses soon will be dressed in the season's finest.

As part of a new initiative, the Bridge of Art, downtown Rock Falls businesses are being decorated with winter snowflakes.

Penny Schopp, one of the lead organizers of the Bridge of Art, called me to let me know the decorations are being made. We did a story on her and co-organizer Catherine Rogers launching the art initiative in September. The two came up with the idea to beautify downtown windows in Sterling and Rock Falls by creating colorful and imaginative displays.

The snowflakes are the work of grade school students in Sterling and Rock Falls. Volunteers are ironing, stringing and sewing the snowflakes together, Schopp told me.

The winter creations will be up in time for the Hometown Holidays parade at 1 p.m. Saturday in the downtown.

Volunteers have stepped up to make the displays possible.

"We got some great, awesome people," Schopp said. "It's really fun to be a part of."

Look out for more Bridge of Art winter decorations in time for Sterling's Seasonal Sights & Sounds festivities at the end of the month.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
