Girls swimming: Tigers' season ends with flurry of personal records

Pat Egan is excited for the next swimming season to begin.

The Byron co-op program’s coach won’t have to wait very long.

After 16 of his 18 Tigers set personal records but failed to reach the state meet with their performances at Saturday’s Jefferson Sectional Meet, it’s immediately time to prepare for the 2013 campaign.

“I it’s even more of a year-round thing than in football,” Egan said. “Most of the girls will be right back with their club teams, most of them by Christmas.”

The Tigers placed fifth at the sectional with 134 points. Freeport won with 275.

“I thought we’d be in a battle between fifth and sixth place, but we put some moves on Hononegah and put some pressure on them for fourth,” Egan said. “The girls did really well.”

Dixon High School sophomores Abbey Blackbourn and Kaylyn Rice were both members of Byron’s third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team that posted a time of 1:46.72.

Byron’s only other top-five showing was the 200-yard medley relay, on which Rice swam the backstroke. The Tigers were fifth with a time of 1:59.95.

Rice was also sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:24.57) and ninth in the 200 back (1:06.41). Blackbourn was ninth in the 50 free (26.83), 11th in the 100 free (1:01.54) and swam on the 400 free relay that took sixth (4:00.92).
