(Continued from Page 1)

Jefferson Sectional

Where: Jefferson High School, Rockford

When: Diving – 9 a.m.; Swimming – 1 p.m. Saturday

Local teams: Byron co-op (Dixon)

Other teams: Auburn, Belvidere North, Boylan,  Freeport, Guilford, Harlem, Hononegah, Marengo, Rockford Christian, Rockford East

Swimmers to watch: Abbey Blackbourn, Byron (Dixon), so. (50 freestyle); Olivia Cacciatore, Belvidere jr.  (200 IM); Lexie Joy, Freeport so. (200 free); Joelle Maish, Belvidere (500); Kaylyn Rice, Byron (Dixon) so. (100 backstroke); Kendra Wulf, Hononegah so. (diving)

Outlook: Freeport and Belvidere battled for the NIC-10 championship, with the Pretzels coming out on top thanks to the super sophomore Joy. Look for those two to compete for the sectional title and send a host of girls down to state. Rice and Blackbourn have had strong sophomore campaigns. This meet could help them prepare for bigger things in the next two seasons.

Advancement: First place in each event and any competitor who bests state qualifying cut advances to state meet next Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School.

Rock Island Sectional

Where: Rock Island High School (Diving at Augustana College)

When: Diving – 9 a.m.; Swimming – 1 p.m. Saturday

Local teams: Morrison, Newman, Sterling

Other teams: Alleman, Canton, Dunlap, Farmington, Galesburg, Havana, Kewanee, Macomb, Moline, Monmouth-Roseville, Ottawa, Riverdale, Rock Island, United Township

Swimmers to watch: Michaela Busch, Morrison (50 freestyle); Kelly Bishop, Rock Island sr. (200 IM); Abbie Brenner, Sterling sr. (100 butterfly, relays); Delaney Duncan, Galesburg so. (50 free; Kaylie Noll, Dunlap jr. (500 freestyle); Alaina Potts, Dunlap so. (100 breaststroke); Sarah Rowe, Canton sr. (100 backstroke); Charli Wike, Sterling jr. (100 breast)

Outlook: Dunlap bested Sterling by 50 points at last year’s sectional. The same two teams will likely battle for first again, with Galesburg also talented enough to push them. Wike is the best bet for an individual state berth, and the Warriors should make a good run at a couple of the relays.

Advancement: First place in each event and any competitor who bests state qualifying cut advances to state meet next Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School.
