Whiteside United Way halfway to goal

Lee County agency falls short – but still has hope

STERLING – United Way of Whiteside County has raised about $400,000, more than half of its fundraising goal, Executive Director Russ Siefken said Thursday.

The goal is to raise $710,000 by March, when the campaign ends.

Money raised will help fund 20 nonprofit and charitable organizations such as the American Red Cross Lincoln Land Branch, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and Blackhawk Area Council Boy Scouts.

Meanwhile, United Way of Lee County has raised about $240,000 in its annual campaign, which ends today – far short of its $400,000 goal.

They may hit their goal by April 1, though, Executive Director Susan Hohlen said Thursday.

The part of the campaign that involves “hitting the pavement” and meeting with volunteers ends today, but the agency expects to continue to receive money from some major firms, Hohlen said.

The agency won’t know until the first of the year its contributions from some companies, because they use automated, online pledges that take longer to reach the agency, she said.

It has raised less money than usual at this point in the campaign, she said, attributing that difference to companies running campaigns later.

Money raised by United Way of Lee County will be divided among 28 nonprofit and charitable groups.
