Lee United Way has some ground to gain

Director expects to raise the money in a few more months

DIXON – United Way of Lee County has raised about $240,000 in its annual campaign, which ends today – far short of its $400,000 goal.

They may hit the goal by April 1, though, Executive Director Susan Hohlen said Thursday.

The part of the campaign that involves “hitting the pavement” and meeting with volunteers ends today, but the agency expects to continue to receive money from some major firms, Hohlen said.

The agency won’t know until the first of the year its contributions from some companies, because they use automated, online pledges that take longer to reach the agency, she said.

It has raised less money than usual at this point in the campaign, she said, attributing that difference to companies running campaigns later.

“Most companies are not locally owned,” Hohlen said. “Their corporate headquarters determine when campaigns are run for some companies. Some of the headquarters have changed up the dates for the campaigns.”

Money raised by United Way of Lee County will be divided among 28 nonprofit and charitable groups.

Meanwhile, United Way of Whiteside County has raised about $400,000 of its $710,000 goal, Executive Director Russ Siefken said. That campaign ends in March.

United Way of Whiteside County serves 20 nonprofit and charitable groups.
