Kudos, vets; they really fought for us

Political candidates say they fight for the people, but the fighting and service performed by military veterans is what has preserved, protected and defended our country. Thank you, veterans.

Election Day, Nov. 6, and Veterans Day, Nov. 11, are closely juxtaposed this year.

In campaign ads, candidates on the Election Day ballot often declare they are “fighters” and are willing to “fight for you.”

Military veterans must shake their heads at such talk.

Those dedicated men and women know all too well what fighting for the people means. They’ve done it. Their service to the nation preserves our freedom and protects our democracy, with all its flaws.

While candidates are quick to tout their records, you don’t often see that with military veterans. It’s left to family members and friends to point with pride to the service records of loved ones.

You’ll see examples of that in Sauk Valley Media’s Salute to Veterans special section, which will be part of Saturday’s SV Weekend edition.

The 48-page section has articles about the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

Also included are photos of nearly 500 military veterans from the Sauk Valley. Family members provided them so that the public can know of each veteran’s service and sacrifice for freedom.

The photos run the gamut from A to Z. In this case, “A” stands for Spec. Greg Adams, 1st Aviation Brigade, who served 2 years in Vietnam. “Z” stands for Richard W. Zopf, who served 4 years in the Army during World War II.

We encourage readers to seek out the Salute to Veterans section Saturday and give it a thoughtful read.

Consider, also, attending a Veterans Day observance. Some area programs are Saturday, some are on Veterans Day itself (Sunday), while others will be Monday. Consult SVM’s Salute to Veterans for dates, times and locations.

It has been said that people who value their freedom should thank a veteran. We agree.

To all area military veterans, we offer our profound thanks.
