Help available for winter heating bills
ROCK FALLS – Winter heating assistance through the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications will be accepted until the funds are depleted.
A single-person household can qualify with a monthly income of up to $1,396; a two-person household with up to $1,891; a family of three with up to $2,386; and a family of four with up to $2,881.
Benefits are paid directly to utilities, except for households whose heating costs are included in their rent.
LIHEAP is administered locally by the Tri-County Opportunities Council, which is based in Rock Falls and serves people in Bureau, Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, among others.
Applicants must bring all required documentation when applying for assistance, including proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day period before the application date; a copy of heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if they pay for their energy directly); a copy of their rental agreement, if they are renting, showing whether utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information; proof of Social Security numbers for all household members; proof that their household received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or other benefits, if receiving assistance from the state Department of Human Services.
