Dixon rolls Ottawa
in season opener

Behind a steady 748 series thrown by senior Brandon Bonnette, the Dixon Dukes beat Ottawa in a Northern Illinois Big 12 match Tuesday at Dettores Town Lanes.

Bonnette had games of 250, 244 and 254. Connor Allen and Andrew Hamburg added series of 633 and 611, respectively.

Bears sign Anderson to practice squad

As expected, the Chicago Bears signed wide receiver Joe Anderson to their practice squad Tuesday and terminated the practice squad contract of wide receiver Kamar Aiken.

Anderson, an undrafted free agent out of Texas Southern, spent the first 8 weeks on the practice squad before being released last week after sustaining a minor non-football injury.

Cowboys’ Jones intends to remain GM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones intends to keep the title of general manager, he said during his twice-weekly radio show.

The Cowboys are 3-5 heading into Sunday’s game at Philadelphia.

UCLA’s Mora calls out Twitter imposter

UCLA football coach Jim Mora lashed out at a person portraying themselves as freshman safety Randall Goforth. There were several posts made directed at USC receiver Robert Woods, which brought replies from Woods and others.

The account has been suspended. Mora challenged the imposter to join the team in practice, calling him a “coward.”

Howard doesn’t like All-Star ballot

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard sounded off on the new All-Star Game ballot that eliminates the center designation, saying, “I don’t like it at all.”

This season’s change has fans voting for three frontcourt players, instead of two forwards and one center.

MLB

Sox shuffle scouting department

The Chicago White Sox made several changes in their amateur scouting department after the conclusion of their organizational meetings in Phoenix, Ariz.

East coast crosschecker scout Nick Hostetler was promoted to the assistant director of scouting.

J.J. Lally, assistant director of player development and scouting, will become an amateur scout.

National crosschecker Ed Pebley’s duties will now concentrate on top amateur hitters, with Larry Monroe’s concentration remaining on amateur pitchers.
