Marines celebrating their 237th birthday

Published: Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 1:15 a.m. CDT

DIXON – Commandant Tim Villa invites all Sauk Valley Area Marines and the public to the Dixon Area Marine Corps League Detachment’s Marine Corps Birthday Pageant, celebrating the 237th birthday of the corps.

It will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dixon VFW, 1560 Franklin Grove Road. Admission is free.

Traditionally, regardless of location, Marines pause to observe their birthday by sharing a cake. A sword is used to cut the cake as a reminder that they are a band of warriors, committed to carrying the sword, so that our nation may live in peace.

The first piece is presented to the Guest of Honor, the second to the oldest Marine in attendance, signifying the honor and respect accorded to experience and seniority.

Symbolically, the eldest Marine present passes a piece of cake to the youngest Marine present, just as for 233 years their experienced Marines have nurtured and led young Marines that will fill their ranks and renew their Corps.
