Illinois reports 2nd case of fungal meningitis
CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago resident is hospitalized in stable condition with a probable case of fungal meningitis, the second Illinois case tied to the use of a steroid injection from a Massachusetts pharmacy.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the new case Friday. Like the first reported Illinois case, the patient received an injection at one of the three APAC Centers for Pain Management that received the recalled steroid.
The first patient has been discharged from a hospital and is recovering.
The New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts has now recalled all of its products going back to the first of the year. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation suspended the pharmacy's state license last month.
Nationally, 29 people have died in the outbreak of fungal meningitis.
