Sterling’s Lopez
NIB-12 West MVP

Sterling senior defender Alfredo Lopez was named the Northern Illinois Big 12 West Most Valuable Player.

Dixon seniors Kurt Gale, Zac Harden and Matthew Kerr were named to the first team, as were Sterling seniors Bryan Gutierrez, Lopez, Danny Navarro and Pedro Ocampo and junior Carlos Gallardo.

Dixon seniors Brandon Bass and Alex Faivre received honorable mention, along with Sterling sophomore Juan Carlos Silva-Rodriguez. See the complete teams on B3.


Bears’ Tillman named defender of month

Charles Tillman was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October after scoring two touchdowns and helping shut down Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, as the Bears were 4-0 in the month.

Fellow Bears cornerback Tim Jennings won the award in September. The Bears have now won it in 3 of the last 4 months it’s been given. Defensive end Julius Peppers won it in November 2011.

Buccaneers trade Talib to Patriots

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced minutes after Thursday’s trade deadline that they had completed a deal to send cornerback Aqib Talib to the New England Patriots.

The Patriots also receive a seventh-round pick and agreed to trade their 2013 fourth-round pick to the Buccaneers.


Rhode Island agency sues Schilling

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and some former officials of his now-defunct video-game company were sued Thursday by the Rhode Island economic development agency.

The suit stems from the $75 million loan guarantee given to 38 Studios. It comes after the company filed for bankruptcy.

Former All-Star pitcher Perez killed

Former Atlanta Braves All-Star pitcher Pascual Perez reportedly was killed during a robbery at his Dominican Republic home.

Reports indicate a possible motive for the attack/robbery may have been the fact that Perez had just received his Major League Baseball pension payment. Local police are investigating.


Jury charges former PSU prez Spanier

A grand jury has charged former Penn State President Graham Spanier with participating in a “conspiracy of silence” to cover up child sex abuse by former football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Spanier, 64, was accused of child endangerment, perjury and criminal conspiracy, all felonies. He also faces misdemeanor counts of failure to report suspected abuse, conspiracy and obstruction of the administration of law.

Two other officials, Athletic Director Tim Curley and retired Vice President Gary Schultz, also face new charges of child endangerment, criminal conspiracy and obstruction.
