ROCKFORD – The weekly Rock River Times is endorsing incumbent U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Colona, in the race for the 17th Congressional District.

Schilling faces former East Moline Alderwoman and Democrat Cheri Bustos in Tuesday’s election.

The Rock River Times said Schilling “is very well liked” and “his respected pizza business stands him in good stead with the business community and local citizens.” It noted that Schilling “attended the Rock River Trail Initiative legislative briefing at Burpee Museum of Natural History last year” and that he “has been very supportive of the trail.”

The paper also praised Schilling’s “working man’s roots and business acumen,” and said “we need both of those traits in Congress today.”

Candidate finishes leadership course

MORRISON – Whiteside County Board member and candidate Steve P. Wilkins of Morrison, the county’s Democratic Party chairman, has completed a university-level leadership course, the United Counties Council of Illinois said in a news release.

Wilkins, also a community relations manager for the Illinois Department of Transportation, is seeking his second term on the board.

He graduated from the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs 2012 Leadership Academy, a comprehensive program designed for county officials, elected and appointed, that focuses on critical thinking, problem-solving, planning, self-assessment and change, the council said in a news release.

The academy is a joint venture of the U of I and the council.
