FYI: Thorpe, coming off a 14th-place individual showing in his second state meet last year, spearheads a Dixon team with top-three aspirations. He also led the Dukes to a 15th-place team finish in 2010. … Yorkville, which beat Dixon 27-59 at the NIB-12 meet, could contend for the title. ... Belvidere North won the Belvidere Sectional with 47 points to runner-up Dixon’s 95 and has won the last three 2A titles. … Preceding the Blue Thunder’s run, Dixon won the 2008 title, edging North 94-97.

Drill

It was easy to get distracted by the performance of it all. The active shooter drill held by Sterling and County Police last week at the high school. The scenario; two armed shooters in the school killing students and teachers and the police and medical technician's response. It's an unfortunate drill, but a necessary one. In the hallways a Halloween mentality took over, especially when the ketchup-blood concoction was applied on the students. Small talk and "what I'm going to do" plans were passed around freely between laughs and odors of the sickly sweet blood stand-in.
