STERLING – David J. Martinez, 69, of Sterling, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Alden Park Strathmoor in Rockford. He was a crane operator for Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. for many years.

David was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Pena, Durango, Mexico, the son of Jose and Manuela (Gomez) Martinez. He married Ilda Sotelo on Feb. 14, 1969, in Sterling.   

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Esther Martinez of Sterling; one son, David J. Martinez Jr. of Rock Falls; one sister, Angelina Cardenas of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; four brothers, Erasmo (Belen) Martinez of North Carolina, and Esiquel (Paulina) Martinez, Rudolfo (Beatrise) Martinez and Antonio Martinez, all of Austin, Texas; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. 

A memorial has been established.

Wise saw collapse in support

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
