John Paxson said Tuesday that Derrick Rose still isn’t making cutting moves in his recovery from surgery on his left knee, and the Chicago Bulls executive vice president of basketball operation said the team hasn’t set any kind of return date for its star point guard.

“He’s made real good progress to this point, but there is still so much ahead of him,” Paxson said. “We’d be foolish to target any type of date. There’s going to have to be a significant amount of time that he spends on the practice floor before we would even entertain him getting into a game.

“Because we’re going to have to see how, once he does start to practice, whenever that is, how his knee and his body respond to hard practices 2 days in a row, 3 days in a row. And then we’re going to have to come up with some type of format of how much is he going to play.”

Paxson said the Bulls will be extremely conservative in their timetable for Rose’s return to full-time playing status.

Although Rose has been seen shooting before preseason games at the United Center and practices at the Berto Center, Paxson said the next big test will be when Rose tries to make cuts with the knee.
