DIXON – The 170th anniversary of First Baptist Church of Dixon will be marked this weekend at the church, 111 E. Second St.

A dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. today at the church. A limited number of tickets are available at the door. The cost is $5.

A special worship service will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The church was founded May 28, 1838, by seven members. In 1842, the church grew to 70 members, separating into the First Baptist Church of Dixon and the Baptist Church of Buffalo Grove (Polo). The Dixon congregation started services Feb. 22, 1842.

A church was constructed in 1843 on Ottawa Street. The current church building was built in 1869, at the intersection of Second Street and Galena Avenue, for $15,000.
