Alice F. Leatherman Esgar

SPRINGFIELD – Alice Fay Esgar, 81, formerly of Amboy, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Fay was born Aug. 28, 1931, in Lyons, Kan., the eldest daughter of Warren A. and Edith M. (Williams) Leatherman. Fay moved to Enid, Okla., where she met her future husband, Allan R. Esgar. They were married Aug. 30, 1956, in Enid.

The couple lived in West Branch, Iowa, for a period of time before settling in Amboy, where they raised their family. Fay and Allan were divorced in 1991. A few years later, Fay moved to Springfield, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dominic Palazzolo.

Fay worked as a medical assistant in Dr. Hill’s office in Lyons, Kan., shortly after graduating from Lyons High School. After marriage, she was a stay-at-home mother. She attended United First Church in Amboy, where she was active in Bible study and helping with bake sales. Fay had a lifelong passion for reading, and a deep love for animals. She was deeply respected by those who knew her as a straightforward person of great moral character.

Fay is survived by her children, Gregory of Riverside, Iowa, Jeffrey (Victoria) of Ashippun, Wis., Lisa (Dominic) Palazzolo of Springfield, Andrew (Fanny Phillips) of Dixon and Martin (Blanche) of Highland Park. Fay was the loving grandmother of 12, Benjamin and Joseph Esgar, Megan, Daniel, and Kelsey Esgar, Steven and Nicole Palazzolo, Stephanie Phillips and Edward, Warren, Vivian, and Donald Esgar.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her only sibling, Janice Schneider of Gravette, Ark.; and her daughter-in-law, Jeanne (Lauer) Esgar of Dixon.

Fay requested that there be no public funeral service, and her family is respecting her wishes. Her cremains will be interred at Prairie Repose Cemetery in Amboy. Staab Funeral Home in Springfield handled arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to United First Church of Amboy, P.O. Box 197, 19 N. Jefferson St., Amboy, IL 61310.
