Activities available for seniors

STERLING – Several programs and trips are scheduled at the Whiteside County Senior Center, 1207 W. Ninth St.

■ An AARP driver safety class will be from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Thursday.

The course will be presented by Betty Kraft-Hartman.

Veterans and their spouses can enroll for free. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

Members must show their AARP card or show their AARP number.

To get an AARP number or to join AARP, call 888-687-2277. Registration is required.

■ A shopping trip to Woodfield Mall will leave at 7 a.m. Thursday from Rock Falls Community Building, 601 W. 10th St., and at 7;30 a.m. from ShopKo, 1350 N. Galena Ave., Dixon. The cost is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers.

■ The Sauk Computer User Group will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 10. Courtnie Anderson from Griffin Computer Repair in Dixon will discuss running a local computer shop. A question and answer session will take place.

■ A free program, “How Will I Get Through the Holidays?,”will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 16, presented by Hospice of the Rock River Valley. Those attending will learn how to deal with feelings of loss during the holidays.

■ A trip to Riverside Casino and Golf will be Nov. 16. Participants will leave at 8 a.m. from ShopKo in Dixon, and at 8:30 a.m. from Kmart, 2901 E. Lincolnway, Sterling.

The cost is $30 for nonmembers and $25 for members, and includes transportation, $5 off the buffet and money on a card. Dropoff will be at Sterling Kmart and then Dixon Shopko. Paid seats go first.

■ Safety training for using medications medication use safety training will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 29 at the senior center. Those attending will learn how to save money on prescriptions and avoid medication problems. Those who arrive by 9:55 a.m. will be eligible for a door prize.

■ A free movie and popcorn will be at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the center. The movie is “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Lunch will be served for $4, including tuna casserole, bread, salad, drink and dessert.
