Volleyball: Oregon, Erie overcome first-set losses, win regional titles

Delaney Mahoney had the Oregon kill machine firing on all cylinders, as the Hawks beat Rockford Lutheran 24-26, 25-19, 25-23 on Tuesday in the Class 2A Rockford Christian Life Regional final.

The sophomore setter racked up 35 assists and five Hawks had at least six kills. Cydney Long had 10, Devyn Absher and Emy Wright had eight, Hailey Long had seven, and Shannon Cullen added six.

“Delaney really shined tonight,” Oregon coach Christy Sitze said. “Her passing and decision-making was outstanding.”

Class 1A Erie

Erie def. Eastland 24-26, 25-15, 25-21: The Rus sisters combined for 20 kills and Brooke Naftzger served the game-winning ace as the Cardinals picked up the intensity in the middle set to oust the Cougars.

Freshman Peyton Rus had 11 kills, and senior Paige had nine. Rachel Cobert had four blocks, Katelyn Temple dealt out 24 assists, and Mary Chapman dug up 19 balls.

Class 2A Fulton

Riverdale def. Fulton 25-19, 25-6: The Rams got seven kills from Hannah Nimrick on the way to the topping the Steamers.

Riverdale (30-3) also got six kills from Payton Mink and five from Sydney Mericle. Nimrick also had 20 assists.

Fulton (16-18-1) got three kills apiece from Rachael Beiermann, Kylie Kennedy, Chelsea Les-niewski, Ann Renkes and Morgan Wierema.
