DIXON – Two sex offenders were back behind bars for violating the state’s sex offender registries after a citywide compliance check Friday, police said in a news release.
Dixon Police Lt. Clay Whelan said police do spot checks when they believe a sex offender is not in compliance. Friday’s check was one that police try to do every 6 months, he said.
About 7:05 a.m Friday, police tried to make contact with Clint E. Starr, 25, who was listed as a homeless sex offender.
Starr pleaded guilty in January 2011 to aggravated criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to 4 years’ probation.
Starr told police he was staying at a home in the 500 block of West Sixth Street, which is within 500 feet of E.C. Smith Park, Whelan said.
Whelan said Starr had been living there off and on for about 2 weeks.
He was charged with unlawful failure to register as a sex offender and was in the Lee County Jail on a $10,000 bond. He has a status hearing Wednesday.
About 7:15 a.m., police went to a home in the 800 block of North Brinton Avenue. Ariel M. Braker, 31, also a homeless sex offender, had tried to register that address as his home, according to police.
Barker pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual abuse in Stephenson County in 2000.
Police told him he couldn’t live there because it is within 500 feet of a day care center, Whelan said. He had been staying there off and on since August. Whelan said.
After people at the home told police that Barker was there, police waited for him to come downstairs but got no response.
Officers searched the second floor of the home and then went into the attic, where they found a window ajar. An officer found Barker lying on the back roof of the house, according to police.
Barker agreed to surrender. He is charged with failure to register as a sex offender and unlawful residence within 500 feet of a day care.
Bond was set at $25,000. He has a status hearing Wednesday.
More arrests are pending, Whelan said.
