I first became aware of Cheri Bustos as an alderwoman when she began sending her constituents a newsletter at her own expense. In the newsletter, she described the actions of the East Moline City Council and explained her votes. I found this to be invaluable.
I feel compelled to write this letter because of the ludicrous charges leveled against her by Bobby Schilling. He is promoting the idea that she is a “big spender.”
The road to the country club he refers to in one of his ads was in dire need of repair, and construction on it was approved before her election.
Also, Schilling criticized her because water bills increased while she was on the city council. That was because the old infrastructure was falling apart. Failure to repair it would have resulted in more costs later. Her votes showed common sense.
Unfortunately, common sense seems to be in short supply in our current Congress. Bobby Schilling and his fellow tea party members have contributed mightily to its dismal 10 percent approval rate. The last 2 years have resulted in little meaningful legislation because of their doctrinaire insistence on cutting spending, regardless of the impact.
One example is their recent failure to pass a farm bill despite the drought. Congress failed because of Republican opposition to food assistance programs. This happened while 16 million children are living in poverty because of the Bush recession.
We can do better. Please use your common sense. Vote for Cheri Bustos.
