Come to Nov. 9 meeting to back concealed carry

Published: Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 1:15 a.m. CST

Last year about this time, the Brown County Board sent a resolution to all county boards in the state of Illinois. It called on them to write a letter of endorsement to the state Legislature in support of House Bill 148 (concealed carry). The resolution was referred to the Whiteside County Executive Committee, where it died.

Four counties in the state declined to endorse this bill. They were two metro Chicago counties, East St. Louis, and Whiteside.

At the last meeting of the Whiteside County Board, I brought a petition with 547 signatures asking the board to support this legislation. After presenting the petitions, I asked for questions. The only question asked was when this legislation would be up for a vote. I didn’t know, but I assumed it would be brought up soon. The petition was then referred back to the executive committee for review and action.

Illinois is the only remaining state that has no provision for civilian concealed carry. The Chicago machine continues to blame firearm owners for the gang and violence problems. The current laws protect those criminals and prevent citizens from protecting themselves. Every state that has passed this kind of legislation has seen a dramatic decrease in violent crime. In Florida, it was 15-20 percent.

The Whiteside County Executive Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 9. I would like to see how many supporters of this bill we can have in attendance. Let us not allow this issue to die in committee again.
