Tire guy happy to make ‘road calls’

When you have a flat, his rubber hits the road

STERLING – Chris Campbell is just a phone call away for Sauk Valley drivers with flat tires.

Campbell, 41, owner of Campbell Performance Tire, now delivers tires to motorists caught on the road in an emergency.

Campbell sells and installs tires from his home at 29909 Penrose Road. He buys discounted tires from suppliers and sells and installs them, charging $15 a tire for time and effort, plus the cost of the tire. He also installs at Anything Automotive, 1228 E. River Road in Dixon.

He keeps 1,100 to 1,200 tires in stock at various locations. He focuses on Bridgestone and Firestone tires, but can buy about 20 other brands, including Goodyear and Dayton.

“My focus is to be able to provide people with name-brand tires for a better price,” he said.

His van is equipped with a tire machine and a tire balancer so he can inflate and install on site. He charges $1 a mile for one way of travel, and will deliver and install anywhere within 30 miles of his business

Campbell also offers a free pickup service for those who want their tires replaced, but can’t take time for it. He will drive to the customer’s car, drive it to his business, replace the tires and drive it back.

“You’d save an hour you’d have to take out of work,” he said.

Campbell is a Dixon native who graduated from Sterling High School in 1989.

Moore Tires in Rock Falls also delivers and installs tires for distressed drivers, salesman Bart Lutz said.
