TUCSON, Ariz. – Thelma Jeannette (Wright) Sipe, 90, of Tucson, formerly of Prophetstown, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, in Tucson, where she recently moved to be near family.

She was born Sept. 12, 1922, the daughter of Delbert and Nora Wright. Thelma graduated from Northern Illinois University, at that time called Northern Illinois Teachers College. She married Donald L. Sipe on Aug. 2, 1947. They were married 64 years, living in Prophetstown most of that time.

Thelma had been a teacher of music in public schools in Dundee and Prophetstown. She also helped with the music programs at First Congregational Church of Prophetstown for many years. Traveling to foreign countries and throughout the United States with Donald brought much enjoyment to her life. Always an active volunteer, Thelma enjoyed working with many organizations in Prophetstown, Sterling and Rock Falls. Helping children provided special joy. Thelma made and donated hundreds of quilts, mittens and hats to needy children in the area.

She loved her children – her son, Dean (Ilene) Sipe, and grandsons, Allen (Jenny) and Eric, all of Tucson; her daughter, Diane Sipe of Denver; her son, Reid (Keri) Sipe of Mount Vernon and her granddaughters, Nikki and Kathleen, and her grandson, Brian.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son in infancy, a sister and her husband.

Friends are welcome at a graveside service at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at Coloma Township Cemetery, 908 Avalon St., Rock Falls. The family invites all of Thelma’s friends to visit and share memories after the service at Country Inn & Suites, 2106 First Ave., Rock Falls. Bring’s Broadway Chapel in Tucson handled arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to further Thelma’s passion for local charities, including helping needy children in Whiteside County. Donations may be made to the Thelma J. Sipe Memorial Fund, c/o the Farmer’s National Bank, 114 W. Third St., Prophetstown, IL 61277.
