DIXON – “Proof,” winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for best play, opens Friday at Sauk Valley Community College.
Sauk also is hosting a one-night-only wine tasting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for theater patrons. All tickets are $8 for that night and attendees, who must be 21 or older, will be able to sample wines, cheeses, crackers and desserts before the show starts.
Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Nov. 16 and 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 18 in the Mathis Theatre.
Those who wish to attend the wine-tasting are asked to reserve their tickets by Friday.
“Proof” has been one of her favorite plays for many years, Director Anna Kurtz said.
Catherine, a troubled young woman on the eve of her 25th birthday, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind.
Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness – or genius – did she inherit?
“Audiences will instantly be drawn into the drama surrounding these characters,” Kurtz said in a release announcing the play.
“Life is complex, human beings are complex, and relationships are complex. This play reflects that complexity. Just like life, the characters of ‘Proof’ experience joy and experience sorrow; they have moments of pain and moments of hope. Along with all of these emotions there is also humor.”
The cast includes Natalie Olds and Alli Wolber of Sterling and Peter Basler and Tim Boles of Dixon.
