In a recent letter to the editor, someone said now is not the right time to consider a sports and activities center. “Now is not the time” has been said in our community for more than 20 years.
That is why we are the only town of our size in this area that has nothing for our children. If we stay in this mindset, we will still be without a complex in another 20 years. The small economic impact of a 1-cent sales tax on the dollar is a low-impact way to fill this huge void.
Did you know that practices run at the high school until 9:30 p.m. during the winter? Our track team practices by running the halls of the high school. Youth sports programs such as basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer have suffered tremendously.
There is not enough space for our young athletes, band members or school clubs, and it is not even close. Without the proper facilities, our children will never reach their full potential, and our programs will suffer.
Every night, our citizens leave our community to travel to neighboring communities for programs. They lose valuable time and spend their monies outside Dixon.
Not only is it time for an indoor complex, it is time Dixon starts thinking about the significant economic impact this center will have in our community. If you build it, they will come. It’s time.
