Government blog available till Election Day
University of Illinois Extension now has an informational (and sometimes, humorous) blog on Illinois local government – because local is what really makes the difference in our everyday lives.
The blog will run daily (except Sundays) until the election. It’s time we all understand what’s what when we hear about a new direction or a candidate’s stump speech. The value of regional newspapers is coverage of important local issues. But, the who-what-when-where of even a 750-word article isn’t always enough to provide the foundation readers need to understand what a policy decision really means.
Candidate television or radio ads rely on the notion that simply saying “it’s the economy” supposedly says it all. But when sound bites that have no basis in reality – or even in law – are intended to produce knee-jerk reactions, perhaps it’s time to help voters separate the wheat from the chaff (though “corn from the cob” might be a better phrase around here) to know for themselves – without some media fact checker – what really is the truth in what our candidates spout as fact.
