Smoke detector tour finds room for improvement

Published: Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 1:15 a.m. CST

As a part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13, the Dixon City Fire Department, along with the Dixon Firefighters Charitable Association, conducted our sixth annual Smoke Detector Program.

Smoke detectors are a very inexpensive form of life insurance. Early detection is the key to surviving if a fire were to strike your home. Our firefighters followed a pizza delivery person from six local pizza restaurants throughout the week to 39 houses in Dixon.

From the information we gathered, there is plenty of room for improvement. Of the 39 houses, five did not wish to participate. Of the remaining 34 houses, 19 (56 percent) had working detectors on each floor, which is almost identical to last year at 57 percent. There is definitely room for improvement, with 100 percent being our goal.

Seven smoke detectors were given away along with dozens of batteries. The detectors were donated by Rich Kelly at Ace Hardware and the Dixon Firefighters Charitable Association. The batteries for smoke detectors were donated by Rayovac and are still available through November at both the Dixon City and Dixon Rural fire stations. Bring in your old 9-volt batteries, and we will replace them at no cost.

On behalf of the Dixon Fire Department and Firefighters Charitable Association, we would like to thank the following restaurants: Al and Leda’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Mama Ciminos, Maria’s and Lil Angelo’s. We would also like to thank Sauk Valley Media, River Country WIXN, and WLLT for advertising the promotion. Thanks to Chief Tim Shipman and the firefighters for helping run the program.

This was the sixth year for the program, and we plan to run it again next year. We would like to remind everyone to check their detectors, if they haven’t already, and stay safe.

Note to readers – Mark Callison is a captain with the Dixon City Fire Department.
