Smoke detector tour finds room for improvement
As a part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13, the Dixon City Fire Department, along with the Dixon Firefighters Charitable Association, conducted our sixth annual Smoke Detector Program.
Smoke detectors are a very inexpensive form of life insurance. Early detection is the key to surviving if a fire were to strike your home. Our firefighters followed a pizza delivery person from six local pizza restaurants throughout the week to 39 houses in Dixon.
From the information we gathered, there is plenty of room for improvement. Of the 39 houses, five did not wish to participate. Of the remaining 34 houses, 19 (56 percent) had working detectors on each floor, which is almost identical to last year at 57 percent. There is definitely room for improvement, with 100 percent being our goal.
