Stern’s guiding light still shines
Longtime director remembered on special awards night
STERLING – John Stern was a magnificent presence at the annual Self Help Enterprises awards banquet Wednesday night.
Stern served as executive director of the nonprofit agency that employs more than 300 physically and mentally disabled Whiteside County residents for 35 years until his death last year.
His heart literally filled the room: Brown paper hearts dotted with tiny seeds adorned each place at every table, a tribute to the seeds he sowed and nurtured to grow Self Help into a successful organization.
