Amboy schools give boost to Lee United Way

DIXON – If the United Way of Lee County reaches its fund-raising goal this year, Amboy schools will have played a big part.

At this week’s first update on the 2012 fundraising campaign, Amboy schools reported raising more than $4,000 for the United Way. That already tops the schools’ donation last year, and nearly twice as many employees are giving to United Way.

“Our United Way has represented all of Lee County for 12 years now,” said Sue Hohlen, executive director of United Way of Lee County. “I think more down-county residents now realize how much we do throughout Lee County.”

Mary Jo Zinke of Amboy, a United Way volunteer, said the surge of pledges came from Amboy Central, Amboy Junior High, and Amboy High schools. She said the district now has almost 70 donors, compared with 37 last year. Zinke was honored as the United Way’s Volunteer of the Week.

Another bright spot in this week’s report came from Kim Watley, who is United Way’s volunteer for general contributors in the county outside Dixon. She also passed her goal.

Overall, volunteers reported that $60,000 had been raised, reaching 13 percent of the campaign’s $440,000 goal.

Every dollar raised during the United Way campaign benefits Lee County and is put toward the 28 member agencies that provide health and human services to thousands of county residents.
