School board expels student in Sterling

STERLING – A Sterling High School student was expelled for the rest of this school year and the first semester of the next in a unanimous school board vote Thursday.

Superintendent Tad Everett said he recommended the expulsion.

He would not give any other information about the student.

The expulsion is for an incident that occurred earlier this month, Everett said.

The student was accused of violating board policy 7.190 (3).

That policy states that the district’s administration may discipline students for gross disobedience or misconduct, including, but not limited to “using, possessing, distributing, purchasing, soliciting to obtain, obtaining, attempting to sell, selling, or being under the influence of: any illegal drug or controlled substance; any anabolic steroid unless being administered in accordance with a prescription; any performance-enhancing substance on the Illinois High School Association’s most current banned substance list; any prescription drug when not prescribed for the student; certain inhalants; “look-alike”or counterfeit drugs; and drug paraphernalia.
