Community invited to trail dedication
DIXON – Members of the public are invited to the dedication of the Dixon section of the Rock River Trail on Friday afternoon.
The trail dedication and ribbon cutting will be at 1 p.m. at President’s Park, 201 Lincoln Statue Drive in Dixon.
Dixon Mayor Jim Burke will attend, as will Dixon Park District Executive Director Deb Carey, and Debbie Thompson, member of the Rock River Trail Initiative Council.
The site is at Dixon’s Heritage Crossing, where founder John Dixon operated his ferry on the Galena “lead” trail connecting central and northwest Illinois, according to a news release from Thompson.
The goal of the Rock River Trail Initiative is to provide better access to the river’s natural resources, recreational opportunities, scenic beauty, and historic and cultural assets.
The 300-mile route runs from the river’s source in Fond du Lac, Wis., to the Mississippi River in Rock Island.
The trail dedication and ribbon cutting is expected to last a half-hour.
