EPC, Newman remain in polls

The two remaining undefeated teams in the Sauk Valley held their positions in the latest AP Poll released on Tuesday. Newman (7-0) is ranked No. 2 in 3A, and Eastalnd-Pearl City is eighth in 2A. 

Amboy, which lost to St. Bede last week, received three votes in 2A. A full list of the poll can be found on B4.

Goodell reaffirms bounty suspensions

NEW YORK –NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the discipline for four players in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty case Tuesday, but did adjust certain aspects after meeting with the players individually.

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma remains suspended for the season but will retain the salary he received for the first six games of the season while on the physically unable to perform list.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita had his suspension reduced from three games to one, while free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove saw his ban reduced one game from eight to seven.

Saints defensive end Will Smith’s four-game suspension was upheld.

Sandusky sentenced to at least 30 years

BELLEFONTE, Pa. — Former Pennsylvania State University football coach Jerry Sandusky was ordered to spend at least 30 years in prison on Tuesday for sexually abusing at-risk boys for more than a decade, a sentence likely to keep him behind bars until he dies.

Defiantly maintaining his innocence, the 68-year-old retired defensive coordinator listened as several victims recounted their pain to the packed courtroom. Then, he told the court: “I did not do these alleged disgusting acts.”

Stone staying with White Sox

Breathe easy, White Sox fans: Steve Stone is staying put.

Stone, the Sox’s TV color analyst, had been dropping broad hints lately that he might seek to depart from the booth he shares with play-by-play partner Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, even though he has a year left on his contract.

“My plans are very simple,” Stone said. “I plan to stay with the Chicago White Sox through this contract and hopefully beyond…”

U.S. Open judge passes polygraph

Lois Ann Goodman, the tennis judge arrested the day before this year’s U.S. Open and charged in her husband’s death, has passed a polygraph test in which she denied bludgeoning him with a coffee cup.
